Greasers will still be greasers and Socs will still be Socs. Sometimes I think it’s the ones in the middle that are really the lucky stiffs. -Randy

Life Goes On

Hey everyone,
I haven’t written anything for a long time. Actually, I didn’t have time to write anything.  Now I’m 48 years old. I got married and I have got two daughters. I also started to write my third book. “The Outsiders” is very popular now. It is the best seller. The publisher and a famous movie director told me that they were going to make it a film. I’m very excited about it. Now I want to share some of my experiences with you.
  • First of all, life goes on. Don’t worry about something too much. Things had happened but life continues.
  • Being rich or being poor is not important. The important thing is to be happy.
  • Friendship is very important.

Easier to Run

Today I listened a song called “Easier to Run” It’s lyrics are very similar to Randy and especially Dally. Dally was the tuffest in our gang. He never showed his emotions and he never cried. He always kept his secrets in his heart. His wounds were so deep they never showed. But after Johnny’s death, he got sick of everything. Everything came too much. He wanted to run away and forget everything. He didn’t want to face his pains. He thought it was easier to run. That’s why he wanted to kill himself. He went to a market and stole something. Finally, cops killed him.
I think this song is also similar to Randy’s situation. Randy also wanted to forget his pain. After Bob’s death, he understood fighting was not good. He said “Greasers will still be greasers and Socs will still be Socs. Sometimes I think it’s the ones in the middle that are really the lucky stiffs.”

Greasers & Socs

Last day, I saw Cherry Valance. While I was walking to home, she passed me. She didn’t stop or even waved her hand. I was very sad about this. Maybe she got angry because I wrote everything  I felt about her in the book and I wrote every single word she said to me. But I didn’t change anything. Everything  I wrote in my book is true.
Okay, let’s come to the main topic. I want to write about socs and greasers. Socs are richer than us. They have expensive cars, expensive clothes (especially madras shirts) and they live in a rich neighborhod –west. We aren’t rich. We have long, greasy hairs. We don’t have nice cars and houses like the socs do. If you ask me our resemblances, then I will just say that we both see sunsets. Cherry told me this in drive-in and I understood even black and white has similarities, like us and socs. She also told me that socs also have problems. But I didn't believe her. How can they? They have everything they want.

Nothing Gold Can Stay

If you read my book then you also know about the things happened 4 years ago. With one of my best friends Johnny I ran away to Windrixville. It was a big adventure for us. Everything begun when Johnny killed Bob –the soc. We went to Windrixville and stayed there a week or so. We read “Gone With The Wind” and talked about the poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” Then Dally showed  up and we went to the city. He told us that the next day there was a big rumble and Cherry Valance was spying for us. I was very surprised and a bit angry from this. While we were going to church, we saw the church was on fire. There was a teacher and he told us his students were inside. We quickly ran inside to save the children. I didn’t die because my wounds were not as big as Johnny’s and Dally pushed me from the fire. He also tried to save Johnny, but it was too late. A big timber fell into Johnny’s body. Later we went to the hospital. Darry was very sad because he slapped me. After the rumble –we won it- I went to the hospital with Dally to see Johnny. Johnny’s last words were Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold.” With this sentences, he told me to stay like a child. Always stay the same and always be different than others... I’m trying you stay gold, but it is not easy. It’s true that time changes everything. With time, people change, their thoughts change, their personality change. Maybe I would stay gold if Johnny didn’t die. I always feel his nonexistence. I always need a friend to talk and a friend who can understand me all the time. Since Johnny’s death, I can’t find anyone like this. I miss him more than anyone in the world. Just for Johnny, I stay gold.
